Patrick Head was quick to sign him to work for Williams, and Newey ultimately co-designed the FW14, FW14B and FW15C. His role (particularly with aerodynamics) in the team's dominance can't be overstated, and as access to a wind tunnel and a large budget increased, Newey became the best designer in the world. He continued to design the team's chassis until he left the team at the end of 1996, whereupon he became McLaren's Technical Director, a position he retains today.

It was Renault's RS3 unit, however, that helped catapult Williams to the very top. First appearing in 1991, and in updated form for 1992, it wasn't the out-and-out most powerful engine in F1 (that title remained with Honda), but the RS3C/RS4 units provided the best combination of torque, horsepower and fuel consumption. Beginning with the 1992 triumph, His and Dudot's engines powered the Constructors' champions for six straight years before Renault withdrew again in 1997 having achieved everything possible in Formula 1.
